Here is an interesting site I found today, World Community Grid. It uses distributed computing to solve the mystery of human proteins. IBM and a bunch of big players are involved in this project. Take a look at it. It uses the concept that was made popular by sites such as SETI@home and distributed.net – using idle CPU time of computers to analyze parts of large sets of data.

Here is the description of the project:

Project Name: HUMAN PROTEOME FOLDING PROJECT

Description: This project is determining how proteins coded by human gene sequences are most likely to fold. The knowledge will help scientists build the understanding needed to develop new treatments for diseases.
