Who came first? Friendster or MySpace?

Something that caught my eye today, I noticed that at the bottom of the Friendster site, the copyright starts in 2002. On MySpace the copyright starts in 2003.

So, which site came first? And if it was Friendster, then that means MySpace was a copy of the concept.. if so, why did MySpace become so popular?
